The Buddhist-inspired title of these works composed in Japan were done in the national park and surrounds near Mount Fuji. Their aesthetic is one of melancholy, disappearance, and the poetics of impermanence.
This photographic work (3 series) germinated after an extended stay in the national park near the Mt Fuji region in Japan in autumn. These works are inspired in their atmosphere, their colour and their composition by Haiku and the traditional Edo period woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) of late eighteenth and nineteenth century Japan. The titles also indicate a great deal: foreignness, humility in ignorance, transience, mortality. These works are a testament to a strong compulsion in much of my work over several decades now, what I call the poetics of impermanence.
