A series of hand-printed and tinted prints of the scars of Berlin. Beneath the poem by Schiller immortalised by Beethoven's ninth symphony.
You are unlikely to see these images of Berlin now. These were taken in 1999 when many areas were unrenovated and bore the signs of conflict and ruin. Other images were of the aggressive building throughout the city that was covering the signs of the past. The blue chemical staining is a volatile process without uniform results, adding a distinctive painterliness to the images. Written with a typewriter from the 1920s is Friedrich Schiller's poem "An die Freude," or "Ode to Joy," made famous in the final movement of Beethoven's ninth symphony.
