BLAKATTAK is a collaborative exhibition with Blak Douglas (aka Adam Hill) about the many ways we misidentify and compartmentalise Indigenous identity.
This is an exhibition with sculptures, wall paintings and wall drawings about the reductive and selective ways in which non-Indigenous and Indigenous people choose to view Indigenous identity. The floor work Blakward Pawn, painted by Douglas and conceived collaboratively, is about the cultural "stacked deck" where one side only has pawns and no king. When in the acknowledgment of country white people mention that the land was never ceded, what really does that do except rub in the inevitable? Or is it to make white people feel better about their virtue so business can go on a snormal? The tally work is every day since settlement until the day the exhibition opened. These installations germinated into several more works in the ensuing years.
