Bored Clown Stills

PHOTOGRAPHY · 2018

Stills from a series of short videos involving children in clown get-up. It is about play and affect.

A boy painted as a clown makes funny faces based around irritation and ennui. I have long been interested in masking and how this can drive expression: when masked we tend to be able to deliver a version of ourselves that we are unable to when unmasked, even though as the saying goes we always wear a mask of some kind. When children do this they do it in an undefinably different way from adults. The footage had been worked with filters to give it a poster-like look.
