Dead Flow
INSTALLATION · 2002 · ARTSPACE, SYDNEY · WITH THOMAS GERWIN
An installation at Artspace, Sydney, in collaboration with the Berlin-based electronic sound composer, Thomas Gerwin, based around urban human movement, elemental flux and stasis.
This was the first major collaboration with my old friend, the excellent Thomas Gerwin, one of the most gifted electronic composers I have known. There were two video channels of people moving through train stations, one Town Hall in Sydney and another Alexanderplatz, Berlin. In the Berlin sequence, a punk approaches and yells into the camera. In the Sydney sequence, a guard comes to tell me that I can’t continue filming. These were looped indefinitely. Meanwhile on the adjacent wall were black and white slides (an obsolete medium now) of the Berlin Spree, one after the other, slowly and infinitesimally changing. And low on the floor was a soundscape: an undulating, swelling hum. Movement and stasis, stasis and movement.
