A work commemorating weightlessness and mourning
The origami crane symbolises healing, good fortune, peace, hope and longevity. I made over a thousand of these and made an installation of some suspended, some having fallen to the floor. It was perhaps my first foray into Japanese art and culture in my work. It was a continuation of the strand of my practice dealing with violence and memorisation. The exhibition was concurrent with the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima which took place on 6 August 1945. This detail was not foregrounded but intentional. The indirectness of the reference is part of the work which is dedicated to silence and transience.
