Grumpy Old Men of Paris
PHOTOGRAPHY · 2006 · CITÉ DES ARTS, PARIS
A series of photographs of old men in some of the most famous and pleasant parks of Paris. The works are both about sympathetic observation but they are also metaphors of the passing of an older age and a melancholy forgetting.
This is a photographic series completed when I was in the Cité des Arts Paris Studio in 2006. It is simply of older men, mostly alone, in parks and peaceful places throughout Paris. Looking at the work now over twenty years hence, I can see that the work is a poetic tribute to the ageing population. At the time that was on my mind as well, but also the notion that Paris is full of secrets from the past that are rapidly ebbing away.
