Toasting the World Food Crisis with a Bottle of Dom Perignon
PERFORMANCE · 2008 · CROXHAPOX, GHENT
Performed at Croxhapox, Belgium, I drank a bottle of Dom Perignon while a statistical analysis of the equivalent of the cost of each sip to food and labour in Africa flashed behind me.
This performance was based on what was then a USD 200/bottle of Dom Perignon. Breaking the cost up according to 30 ml sips, I did a statistical analysis of the equivalent of what each sip meant financially according to labour and food costs in various parts of Africa. I covered my face in blue-white mask just to depersonalise my face and drank impassively. I thought the performance would have a fun side but by the first three sips I was disgusted.
