Portrait-Self-Portrait

VIDEO · 2007 · WITH PETER SCULTHORPE

A video work about the late Peter Sculthorpe. It is a work based on the simplicity and intensity of engagement.

This is a video portrait of the late Peter Sculthorpe, collaborator and friend. Sculthorpe is a national treasure and the composer that explored most searchingly into the possibility of an Australian national music. For this work I observed Peter with my camera as he played phrases he used from one of his string quartets based on a theme from Beethoven, the keys spelling out the question: "Muss es sein? Es muss sein" (Does it have to be? It has to be).
