Remember to Forget the Congo

A five day performance in Belgium about the Congo.
This was a 5-day performance leading to an installation at Croxhapox, Ghent, Belgium. The gallery walls were painted black to the height of two metres, and blue plastic was placed along the floor. There was also an "island" in the middle that stored the clothes and shoes used while painting, and a table with the used brushes from each day. From 1 to 5 on the first five days of the fifth month (May), I wrote from André Gide's book Voyage to the Congo, his own heart-of-darkness memoir of the French Congo. I always wanted to do a work about Congo in Belgium. By the end the walls were a skein of paint, the black flickering from behind. An angry concept had evolved into a thing of beauty.
